The Pursuit of Happyness provided Will Smith with his second Oscar nomination, while also marking the debut of his son, Jaden. Based on a true story, Smith plays Chris Gardner. Chris has invested all of his money into bone density scanners. He tries to sell across San Francisco to doctors and hospitals.
Falling on hard times, Chris and his son Christopher Jnr, find themselves homeless and struggling. Meanwhile, a chance encounter reveals Chris’ potential as a stockbroker. He finds himself competing with other interns for a coveted place at a brokerage firm.
The film will have you rooting for Chris and yourself. Showing that it is possible to start from scratch and find success.
David Fincher’s The Social Network provides deeper insight into the creation of Facebook . And the early days of the world’s largest social media network. The story highlights how Facebook came about. As well as shining a spotlight on the fallout between Mark Zuckerberg and co-founder Eduardo Saverin.
Granted, the movie doesn’t necessarily show Zuckerberg in the best light. But it does show the power of an idea and how it can grow into something spectacular. As a college dropout, Zuckerberg provides some serious inspiration for those looking to make it big without spending years at University.
Many entrepreneur biopics feature a male protagonist. It’s refreshing to encounter a movie with a strong female as its inspiration. Directed by Aaron Sorkin (who wrote The Social Network), and starring Jessica Chastain.
Molly’s Game is based on the personal life story of Molly Bloom. Molly launched her own underground poker ring played by celebrities, business leaders and even the Russian Mafia. Soon she is investigated by the FBI and enlists the help of a lawyer to plead her case.

As with most biopics, Moneyball is based on a book (and is again written by Aaron Sorkin). The film is based on a true life story of Billy Beane. He is manager of the Oakland Athletics baseball team. The film portrays his struggles to create a team during the 2002 season.
While not directly related to business, Moneyball features some important lessons on being the underdog and transforming ideas into successful ventures. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards and is a great movie to help you feel inspired about your future. It is one of the best true story movies on Netflix.
The only original screenplay on the list, Good Will Hunting is frequently included in ‘Best film’ lists. This is the film that launched its writers, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck into the spotlight - an inspiring story in itself.
Damon plays Will Hunting, a troubled youth who spends more time causing trouble than putting his talents to good use. Will is an algebra genius, who is spared jail time in exchange for the mentorship of a Harvard professor. Played by Stellen Skarsgard and therapy with determined psychologist Robin Williams.
It’s a heartwarming story about people turning their lives around. Making the most of the opportunities that come their way. An inspiration for anyone from a troubled background wanting to make a change.

Wolf of the Wall street is directed by Martin Scorsese. It follows the true story of Jordan Belfort (played byLeonardo DiCaprio) whose identity changes after he starts work as a stock broker. He gets immersed in a lifestyle fuelled with money, drugs and various other indulgences. Jordan and his business partner Donnie Azoff, found a company and scammed people out of millions of dollars after convincing them to invest in penny shares.
Wolf of Wall Street is an eye opener. As well as providing a lens through which the viewer can witness macho, high stakes greedy and filthy inner workings of Wall Street.
The real Jordan Belfort is has written a memoir which was turned into the film and works as a motivational speaker.
Directed by Cameron Crowe, Jerry Maguire is a story of transformation. A transformation triggered when our hero Jerry is faced with a choice between integrity or dishonesty. Jerry, a sports agent, is fed up with the way the agency handles their relationship with their talent on the roster.
He decides to go it alone and start his own agency. The film follows his relationships with his one and only talent Rod and NFL player. The dynamic between the two is great. Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr make a really convincing pair.
After a lot of ups and downs, they find success together and Jerry is able to mend his relationship with his fiancee, played by Renée Zellwegger.
There is also a focus on Jerry’s other relationships and the all dreaded work-life balance. It is a great movie show.
The big short is about the financial crisis in the US starring Steve Carrell, Ryan Gosling, Brad Pitt and Christian Bale. Directed by Adam McCay, The Big Short has won an Academy Award for the best screenplay. Indeed the film is unique in its storytelling. It involves guest actors -including the late Anthony Bourdain, Margot Robbie, Selena Gomez- who explain complicated financial and /or mortgage terms.
Again the film is based on real life events in the run up to the 2007-2008 mortgage crisis. The film closely follows the stories of financial professionals who predicted and benefitted from the collapse of the housing market.
The founder is a movie about businessman Ray Kroc who is responsible for the McDonald’s empire. In the 1950s Kroc meets the brothers Mac and Dick McDonalds who run their own burger restaurant. Kroc then finds a way to pull the ownership of the restaurant and turn Mcdonald's into the mad fast food chain that we know today.
If business themed films are not necessarily your cup of tea, how about an action film starring strong female leads such as Gal Gadot or Sandra Bullock.
