Jessamy Bagenal's Biography
Jessamy Bagenal is an award winning physician-turned-editor, driven by an unwavering commitment to improve the health of both people and the planet. This dedication is woven throughout her impressive career, which reflects her passion for women and health, climate and health, technology and health, and the interconnectedness of power, politics, and health. Jessamy Bagenal is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Jessamy has a unique story with a foundation in three health-related degrees: a BSc in Medical Anthropology focusing on global inequalities, followed by an MBBS in Medicine and a recent Master's in Public Health focusing on sustainable healthcare. This diverse academic background equips her with a holistic understanding of health at an individual and system level.
Initially, Jessamy trained to be a surgeon for just under a decade in the UK's National Health Service (NHS), this experience instilled in her a passion for clinical excellence. However, her desire to create a larger impact beyond individual patients led her to pursue a fellowship in leadership and policy with the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.
Jessamy joined The Lancet, the prestigious medical journal, in 2018. Her strategic thinking and dedication propelled her to the position of Senior Executive Editor. In this role, she plays a pivotal role in shaping the journal's strategy.
Jessamy’s influence extends beyond editorial duties. She champions diversity and mentorship within the medical field, actively mentoring young professionals and advocating for programs promoting equity, particularly for women and health.
